JumpStart Your Book

“I write books to find out about things.” — Rebecca West

“How do I know what I think until I see what I say?” — E.M. Forster

The JumpStart Your Book coaching package gives authors the individual attention, feedback, and encouragement they need — whether their book is currently just an idea, several pages of notes, a fairly cohesive outline, or a first, second, or third draft.

Whatever a book’s stage of development, jumpstart sessions are designed to guide authors through the sometimes difficult-to-discern steps of either beginning or continuing their book project — all with a minimum of wasted effort and unnecessary frustration.

Here are a few author scenarios:

  • Some authors feel tremendously inspired by their message, and excited about getting their story or their ideas — or both — onto the page. Their jumpstart sessions will focus on the best way to begin and keep going; and later on, how to shape what they have written.
  • Other authors are interested in refining their ideas and book outline, before committing themselves to a regular schedule of weekly work. Their sessions will focus on finding the best framework for their book, and shaping that framework for marketability.
  • Still other authors want assistance in shaping and developing their first draft, or their most recent draft, and their sessions will focus on ways to restructure and polish the work they have completed so far.
  • Finally, there are authors whose scenarios fit none of the above, but who nevertheless feel a need for support, encouragement, and ongoing feedback. Their sessions will focus on their unique needs, while offering reading and writing assignments, as a well-lit path to making steady progress with their book.

JumpStart Your Book phone coaching sessions are offered in a package — in groups of three, one-hour sessions — at the special rate of one hundred and fifty-five dollars per session, or four hundred and sixty-five dollars for a single package. (If you live within the United States or Canada, there is no additional phone charge: we will call you.) Most authors complete several packages back-to-back to benefit from ongoing support and guidance.

Between sessions, there are writing and reading assignments, with emailed pages of feedback, lessons, and encouragement. (Phone sessions are also recorded, and the audio file emailed after each one.) The amount of time between sessions is flexible (though it’s usually two to three weeks), and varies according to individual needs and schedules.

Perhaps most importantly, every session is wholly unique and structured solely in response to each author’s ongoing progress, evolving needs, and changing aims.

This is essential, as no two coached authors are alike — particularly as they begin to sharpen and refine the skills they need to write their book.

Authors who are willing to work with mature dedication, who have specific personal goals in mind, and who would enjoy supported but independent study and practice, will gain the most from a series of JumpStart Your Book sessions.

“Working with Laurel Marshfield had me jumpstarting my book project by leaps and bounds!

After being ‘stuck’ for five months on the process of outlining my book proposal, she helped me think through my book idea, and worked with me to draft a winning book outline — one that has received very positive feedback from established writers and editors.

Laurel helped me turn my abstract ideas into concrete, workable language that will appeal to the self-help market, and I now feel confident that I have a publishable book. I’m also more focused on producing the chapters I need to write, within a timeframe that fits my life schedule and its many competing commitments.”
